The European Union sent a letter to the United States, in which it expressed concern about the possible introduction of duties on goods and services of the EU countries. This was reported by El Pais.
According to the source, the European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, spoke about the damage to companies and world trade, which could entail an increase in tariffs. In her opinion, such a move would only “jeopardize jobs on both sides of the Atlantic” at a “delicate moment”. In this regard, the European Commissioner urged the United States to try to find a “fairway” out of this situation.
A letter was sent to Robert Lighthizer, US representative at the trade talks after some members of the community expressed their concern and called for a response to the possible imposition of duties.
Malmstrom regretted that Washington “seems to have made a decision.” She noted that this will complicate the settlement of this problem through negotiations. The European Commissioner also stressed that the introduction of duties “will push the EU to introduce countermeasures.”
Recall that US President Donald Trump in April announced the introduction of duties on goods from EU countries in the amount of $11 billion. Thus, he decided to “punish” the EU for subsidies for the European aircraft company Airbus.
As we already wrote, due to the increase in EU tariffs last year, the American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson decided to transfer the production of some motorcycles from the USA to Europe.
