Police use tear gas against protesters near the White House

Police began using tear gas against protesters near the White House in Washington, The New York Times reports.

According to the newspaper, the demonstrators turned over and set fire to cars parked near the White House. In addition, the protesters burn American flags, reports The Washington Post.

On the evening of May 31, a curfew was announced in Washington, DC; it took effect from 23:00 on Sunday. In addition, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser deployed US National Guard fighters to support the local police department.



Mass protests have been going on in the US for several days due to the death of African American George Floyd after being detained by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the detention on May 25, one of the policemen put a knee on his neck, ignoring Floyd's cries that he had difficulty breathing. Floyd later died in the hospital.

Due to mass protests in several cities, including Minneapolis, Cincinnati (Ohio) and Portland (Oregon) imposed curfews. According to CNN, this measure is valid in 40 cities.
