“The worst is to come”: The new epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic is named

Alarming statistics on the spread of coronavirus in Latin America suggests that the region could become a new focus of the pandemic, reports Der Spiegel.

The head of Medecins Sans Frontieres in Brazil, Ana de Lemos, stressed that Latin American countries have recorded record morbidity and mortality in recent weeks.

In some cities, the situation is comparable to the peak of the epidemic in the United States and Europe.

“In Peru's capital Lima, twice as many people die than usual. The figure is comparable to the worst month of the epidemic in Paris,” writes Der Spiegel.

In the Brazilian city of Manaus, where two million people live, the mortality rate has tripled. These statistics were characteristic of London and Madrid, where the most severe epidemiological situation was observed, Sarovich said. The city of Guayaquil in Ecuador, where five times more people died than in previous years, threatens to turn into a second New York, he said.

It is noted that already now in Brazil have resorted to mass graves of people who died of coronavirus — they are buried in stacked coffins. In addition, there are few tests for COVID-19 in the country.
