The American leader is ready to apply more than sanctions against Ankara if the Kurds are destroyed in northern Syria.
US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will destroy the Turkish economy if it begins to destroy the Kurds in northeast Syria. He stated this to reporters on Wednesday, October 9.
“I will destroy his (Turkish President's) economy if this happens. Once I already did it in connection with pastor (Andrew) Brunson. I hope that he (Erdogan) will act rationally,” the American leader emphasized.
Trump noted that he was ready to do “something much more than sanction,” and warned Erdogan about this.
“I tried to stop him (Erdogan) literally from the first day as president, but they want to fight,” the US president said.
He also said that Washington had withdrawn all of its troops from the zone of the Turkish operation in Syria and was taking out some of the “most dangerous” militants from the Islamic State terrorist group that had been captured earlier.
Senator Lindsay Graham had previously proposed personal sanctions against the Turkish president due to the start of a military operation in Syria.
Recall, on October 9, Turkish President Recep Erdogan announced the start of a new operation in Syria called the Source of Peace.
Its goal is to create a buffer zone in northern Syria where refugees can return. Ankara intends to clear this territory of the soldiers of the Kurdish militias.
