Belarusian president considers plausible scenarios plausible
Due to the destruction of the architecture of arms control, a local conflict between NATO and Russia could develop into a nuclear war in a few minutes.
This is the opinion of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, about which he announced on October 8 at the international conference “European Security: Moving from the Edge of the Abyss” held in Minsk.
“We can’t but worry about the fact that the degree of distrust and confrontation between East and West has reached the limit,” he said.
Lukashenko noted the plausibility of the most terrible scenarios voiced by political scientists and other experts in the field of security and disarmament.
“In just a few minutes, Russia and NATO, for example, can go from an unintended local conflict to a nuclear war,” the Belarusian leader added.
In addition to this, according to Lukashenko, because of the withdrawal from the US and Russia from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles, the process of destroying the arms control architecture has actually reached the finish line.
He recalled that another document between Moscow and Washington, the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty, would expire in 2021, without extending which “the world will be in a situation where relations in the nuclear arms' sphere will not be regulated at all.”
“Humanity is moving by leaps and bounds to the line beyond which there is indeed a chasm,” summarizes Alexander Lukashenko.
