People fleeing New York during the coronavirus pandemic were ordered to quarantine themselves for 14 days, wherever they were.
Dr. Deborah Birks said at a White House coronavirus task force briefing on Tuesday evening that more than 60% of all new cases of coronavirus in the US come from New York State, including Long Island and Westchester.
“We remain deeply concerned about the state of New York,” she said, adding that the situation in the New York metro area is much worse than in other areas of the state. In a panic, residents are massively leaving the Big Apple to wait out the peak of the pandemic elsewhere.
“Everyone who has left New York in the past few days may already be infected,” said Dr. Birks.
Health officials now urge anyone leaving the New York metro area to quarantine independently for 14 days to stop the spread of the deadly virus.
According to Birks, the surge in new cases of COVID-19 on Long Island suggests that New Yorkers fleeing the Big Apple to their suburban homes are spreading a pandemic.
“Therefore, it is very important that these people are independently quarantined in their homes for the next 14 days to make sure they are not transmitting the virus,” Birks said.
A new warning came after Tuesday, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the peak coronavirus in the state would only be in 14-21 days.
