Named the most coronavirus-protected blood group

Chinese scientists have confirmed that the blood group influences human vulnerability to coronavirus. The most susceptible were patients with group II blood and the most resistant — with group I. Preprint with the results of scientific work published in the repository medRxiv.

Named the most coronavirus-protected blood group

Experts have compared the distribution of different blood groups of the AB0 system in 2173 patients with COVID-19 from three hospitals in Wuhan and Shenzhen with the distribution of blood groups in healthy people living in the same regions. Among healthy people, the proportions of groups A, B, AB and 0 are 32.16, 24.90, 9.10 and 33.84 percent, respectively, and for patients — 37.75, 26.42, 10.03 and 25.80 percent, respectively. Thus, people with group A are 1.2 times more likely to have coronavirus infection, and people with group 0 are 1.3 times less likely. Age and gender do not affect distribution.

AB0 blood groups are determined by the presence of genes A, B, 0, and so on, which encode different variants of the glycosyltransferase enzyme. It attaches the rest of the sugars to the erythrocyte surface antigen — agglutinogen, creating a specific agglutinogen A or B. In the blood plasma, antibodies (-, -hemagglutinins) may be present to the antigens, which can cause erythrocyte bonding alone but may be present in humans alone. protein from each pair of agglutinogen A / -hemagglutinin and agglutinogen B / -hemagglutinin. This creates four acceptable combinations: 0 (blood group I), A (II), B (III) and AB (IV).

According to the latest data, 182.4 thousand people have been infected worldwide with coronavirus, over 7.1 thousand have died and 79.4 thousand have been cured. The outbreak of the disease began in late December 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
