The 76th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York
The 76th session of the UN General Assembly has started in New York.
The main topic is expected to be the current situation in Afghanistan. In addition, issues of social equality, the pandemic, and vaccination, the problem of the slave trade, climate change, and others are on the agenda. The event will last from 14 to 30 September, the first day of the high-level general debate will be held on Tuesday, 21 September.
The powers of the chairman of the General Assembly are beginning to be fulfilled by the representative of the Maldives, who served as the country's Foreign Minister, Abdullah Shahid. The Security Council is headed by Ireland in September.
"I am focused on universal vaccination as part of restoring the world from COVID-19. We are simply obliged to close the vaccination gap, " Shahid said at the opening of the new session of the General Assembly.
He also said that he will hold a high-level meeting on climate in October.
The General Assembly meets for regular sessions from September to December each year, and then as necessary.
Earlier, Washington did not rule out new global sanctions against the radical Taliban movement, which came to power in Afghanistan.
