Europeans want to see Merkel as the EU president
Residents of the European Union see German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the forefront of European politics, despite her imminent departure from the post of head of the German government.
According to a survey by the analytical center of the European Council on International Relations, more than 50% of respondents gave her preferences as a possible EU president.
In contrast to Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron was exposed in the study, only 10% of respondents approved his candidacy. At the same time, the German chancellor received the most support in the Netherlands вЂ” here 58% of respondents spoke in favor of her, and Macron scored the highest percentage in Bulgaria вЂ” 12%.
At the same time, EU residents are quite skeptical about the preservation of Germany's leading role in the union after Merkel's departure. Thus, only 17% believe that Germany will be able to effectively protect European interests in relations with China. Moreover, in Germany itself, 52% of respondents are sure that the" golden age " of the country is in the past.
