Merkel: The EU is interested in joining the Union of the Western Balkans
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during her visit to Belgrade that the accession of the Western Balkans to the European Union is a great geostrategic interest of the EU.
"There is an idea that the process (of European integration) is proceeding slowly and Europe is coming up with new requirements. But we see results and progress... But all the member states of the European Union should keep in mind that there is a great geostrategic interest for all these countries to be admitted to the EU," Merkel said.
Deputy official Representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers Marta Fitz noted that Merkel will visit Serbia and Albania on September 13-14, where she will meet with the leaders of both countries, and with the leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo.
Earlier, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said during a meeting with Merkel that his country knows that it will not join the EU until the Kosovo issue is resolved, Belgrade stands for finding a compromise solution in the dialogue.
