The Russian-Belarusian exercise "West-2021" caused concern in Poland. They called on NATO to speak to Russia "in a language of strength," reads the article Tygodnik TVP.
The author of the material, Pyotr Petrovich, called the maneuvers alarming.
The Russians want the countries of our region to feel threatened and the North Atlantic Alliance to reduce its activity on its eastern flank.<...> NATO needs to become more active in the region," the article says.
The practical phase of Belarusian-Russian joint strategic maneuvers "West-2021" will be held from September 10 to 16 at nine training grounds in Russia and five in Belarus. About 200 thousand people, more than 80 planes and helicopters, as well as about 760 pieces of military equipment, including 15 ships, will take part in the maneuvers.
Earlier NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Russia must provide the European side with more information about the military exercises "West-2021". He noted that in the Baltic States, Poland, and Ukraine, concern over Russian military plans is growing. Stoltenberg also said that previous exercises were much larger than Moscow had announced.
The NATO Secretary-General urged the Russian authorities to act more openly, predictably, and transparently, as well as to comply with international law with regard to military training operations on European territory.
