India has administered more than 10 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in one day
India administered more than 10 million doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 in a single day, a national record that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a “remarkable feat” for the country. This was reported by Reuters.
India has now administered a total of one billion doses of the vaccine, of which at least one dose has been given to more than half of the 944 million adults, and 15 percent of the population has received the required two doses.
The government plans to reach all adults with the vaccine by December.
“Passing the 1 crore (10 million) mark is a monumental feat. The previous daily record was 9.2 million,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
Vaccine production in India rose sharply this month, thanks mainly to the Indian Serum Institute, which now produces about 150 million doses a month of its version of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The surge in vaccine production came after India reported an increase in new infections for the second day in a row.
The incidence fell to a five-month low of 25,166 cases in the middle of the month but has risen sharply in the past three days, mostly in the southern state of Kerala, which recently held a big festival during which families usually gather.
Kerala accounts for nearly 70 percent of new coronavirus cases in the past week and more than half of the total number of active cases.
Meanwhile, India reported 46,759 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, the highest in two months.
The government said the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 32.7 million and the number of deaths rose by 509 to 437,370 in the past 24 hours.
