Merkel considers Belarusian illegal immigrants “an attack on the entire EU”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the situation with illegal immigrants from Belarus is an attack on the entire European Union. She said so during a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in Berlin.

“We see that people are being used as a means in a hybrid confrontation,” she said. According to her, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko uses refugees, for example, from Iraq.

“We condemn this in a strong way,” Merkel said, adding that a common position of the union will be formulated during the conference at the level of EU interior ministers.

Earlier, the Estonian authorities decided to arm border guards and police officers with stun guns to protect them from illegal migrants entering the European Union through Belarus. To prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country, all patrol officers will be equipped with non-lethal weapons.

In July, the Lithuanian authorities introduced a state of emergency due to the influx of illegal immigrants from the Middle East who enter the country from the territory of Belarus. Border guards claim a record flow of refugees since 1991. The security forces regularly stop the attempts of the discontented to raise a riot in the migration camps.
