It's a failure: Merkel speaks out about the situation in Afghanistan

A country with a democratic structure could not be built and now it is necessary to secure as many people as possible, said the German leader.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the Western coalition in Afghanistan has been defeated and now it is necessary to focus on rescue. She said this during a speech at the leadership meeting of the Christian Democratic Union on Monday, August 16, according to Bild.

“We are going through bitter times, now we must focus on salvation!” — said the German chancellor, commenting on the situation in Afghanistan.

At the same time, Merkel acknowledged that now the safety of evacuating people from Kabul airport depends only on the U.S. military.

The chancellor noted that the withdrawal of U.S. troops led to a “domino effect” that broke the order formed over 20 years.

“We wanted to build a country with a democratic structure, we failed. There was no connection between the Afghan armed forces and the people, it didn't work the way we thought it would,” Merkel said.

The German chancellor noted that now we should pay attention to something else: “What can be achieved by such interventions? How can we implement political orders in other countries?”

“The decision to withdraw troops triggered a new dynamic. For many who believed in democracy and freedom, especially women, this is a sad result,” she stressed.

Merkel also stressed that it was now necessary to secure as many people as possible.

Earlier it was reported that EU countries are evacuating diplomats from Kabul. Italy, France, Germany, Finland, and Sweden decided to close their embassies in Afghanistan.
