EU authorities do not intend to open external borders for a new influx of illegal immigrants, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Wednesday.
“The borders of Greece and the Schengen area will remain closed, and we will guarantee that they will remain closed,” the French media quoted the minister as addressing members of the French upper house.
At the same time, he called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to clarify his intentions with Ankara's NATO allies in the current situation, and not seek their support while Turkey is acting unilaterally in Syria.
“We need to hold honest and open discussions with Turkey quickly to understand who holds positions and where our interests converge, otherwise we will not achieve anything,” the minister said.
Turkey announced last week that the country has opened borders with the EU for refugees because it is unable to cope with a new wave of Syrian migrants. Subsequently, thousands of illegal aliens flew to the border with Greece.
According to Greek authorities, about 15,000 migrants gathered on the border between Turkey and Greece on Wednesday. They claim to have prevented more than 28,000 attempts to cross the border and detained 220 people who entered Greece.
The number of migrants who crossed the border between Turkey and Greece on Wednesday was already 135.8 thousand people, according to Anadolu Agency, citing Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soil. On Tuesday, 130.5 thousand migrants were reported.
