Republicans stopped the work of the US Senate because of the Nord Stream 2

Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee blocked the appointment of dozens of candidates to the State Department. They are demanding that the US President Biden administration impose new sanctions on North Stream 2, writes The Hill.

Republicans have reportedly blocked the confirmation of nearly 30 nominees, including six for assistant secretary of state, as well as several ambassadorial nominees.

"All of the senators in this chamber know exactly why these nominees have not moved forward, and the reason is that the Biden administration is now openly ignoring the U.S. Congress,” Cruz said at a meeting this Wednesday.

He noted that with the completion of the pipeline, Russia will receive billions of dollars that it can use “for malicious efforts in Europe and around the world.”

Earlier, it was reported that a group of 12 Republican U.S. senators, led by Pat Toomey, gave an ultimatum to the U.S. Treasury Department and the White House over Nord Stream 2.

On July 21, the U.S. and Germany issued a joint statement on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which spelled out the possibility of imposing sanctions against Russia for using the energy resource as leverage against Ukraine. Washington, warning of Kyiv's reaction, has already asked it not to speak critically about it.

“Nord Stream 2” is a pipeline of two strings. The length of each of them is 1.2 thousand kilometers. They run from the port of Ust-Luga to German Greifswald. The total annual capacity of the pipeline will be 55 billion cubic meters of gas.
