New York State Governor announced his resignation

Andrew Cuomo will be succeeded by 62-year-old Lieutenant Governor Katie Hochul. She will become the 57th governor of New York and the first woman to lead the state.

US Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation amid allegations of sexual harassment. He said so in a televised address, the Associated Press reported Tuesday, August 10.

Cuomo's decision will take effect in two weeks. He called it the best way out of the situation.

The 63-year-old Democratic representative assured that he never intentionally disrespected women. However, he said, efforts to fend off this “politically motivated attack” would leave his state feverish for months to come. He doesn't believe he has the right to create such a situation.

“The best thing I can do right now is to resign and let the administration govern,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo is expected to be succeeded by 62-year-old Lieutenant Governor Katie Hochul, a former Democratic congresswoman. She will become New York's 57th governor and the first woman to lead the state.

Recall that last week, State Attorney Letitia James released the results of an independent investigation that said Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed his subordinates. As part of the investigation, investigators heard testimony from 179 people.

In turn, the governor of New York denied his guilt and stated that he was not going to resign.
