The U.S. will monitor the Shishov case — State Department

Washington is saddened by the death of the Belarusian activist in Kyiv and plans to follow the investigation of the Ukrainian authorities, reports Reuters.

The United States authorities intend to follow closely the investigation of the official Kiev into the cause of death of the head of the Belarusian House in Ukraine, Vital Shishov. State Department press chief Ned Price said this at a briefing on Tuesday, August 3.

“We are deeply saddened by reports of the tragic death of Vitaly Shishov. We will continue to closely follow the Ukrainian authorities' investigation into the causes of his death,” the State Department spokesman said.

At the same time, Price noted that Shishov was an important member of Belarusian civil society who lived outside his country “because of the repression and continuing persecution of journalists, political opposition, athletes and ordinary citizens by the Lukashenko regime.”

Recall that the head of the Belarusian House disappeared the day before in Kyiv. Shishov went for a jog and did not return. Today he was found hanged in the woods near the house where he lived.

Law enforcers are considering two versions of Shishov's death — suicide or premeditated murder. Abrasions were found on his body.
