Biden says the U.S. will soon impose new sanctions against Cuba

US President Joe Biden said Washington intends to impose new sanctions on Cuba soon due to the reaction of that country's authorities to the protests, Reuters reported.

“There will be more unless there is a radical change in Cuba, which I don't expect,” he said.

The U.S. president's statement came during a meeting at the White House with a group of Cubans living in the U.S. Biden told the Treasury Department and the State Department to work over the next month on a proposal to allow Americans who have relatives in Cuba to transfer money to them.

In July 2021, there were large-scale protests in Cuba — the first in 27 years. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of cities, and more than 5,000 protesters were detained. The media reported on the use of violence by the police.

Earlier it became known that the U.S. Treasury Department imposed economic sanctions against the Cuban police and its leaders for suppressing the protests.
