An outbreak of a delta strain of a new coronavirus has been detected in Nanjing, China

The strain of a new coronavirus that caused an outbreak of the disease in the capital of the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, the city of Nanjing, turned out to be a “Delta”, the Xinhua news agency reported on July 27.

The recent spike in infection in Nanjing is characterized by a special outbreak site and the highly contagious nature of the strain, Ding Jie, deputy director of the city's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a press conference.

Nanjing, a metropolis with a population of more than 9.3 million people, is facing an increase in the number of locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 every day after several airport workers tested positive for the coronavirus last week.

The city has launched a second round of comprehensive testing for the coronavirus and urged residents not to leave the city unnecessarily.
