The coronavirus pandemic is far from over, and there is a strong increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus in many European countries. This is reported in a joint release of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and WHO.
The statement emphasizes that Europe is “ far from being out of the woods in terms of the end of the pandemic,” including due to the spread of a new strain of the delta coronavirus.
“Despite the enormous efforts of Member States to vaccinate people throughout the region, millions of people remain unvaccinated and, therefore, are at risk of being hospitalized. The good news is that the data clearly show that getting a full series of vaccinations significantly reduces the risk of serious illness and death. When people are called upon to do this, they must be vaccinated, “ the message says.
Earlier, the director of the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization, Hans Kluge, said that WHO may issue a recommendation on mandatory vaccination against the background of the rapid spread of new strains of coronavirus.
