Public hospital workers arrested in Peru for “trafficking” COVID-19 beds

The Peruvian police reported that they eliminated an alleged criminal group that charged $21 thousand per bed for seriously ill patients with COVID-19 in a state hospital, Reuters reports.

According to Prosecutor Reinaldo Abia, the authorities have arrested at least nine people, including administrators of one of the public hospitals in Lima.

It is noted that law enforcement officers went to the hospital after the police received a complaint from the brother of a person suffering from COVID-19-they allegedly asked him for 82 thousand Peruvian sols ($20.7 thousand) to get an intensive care bed.

Health Minister Oscar Ugarte told reporters that such fraud requires immediate response measures.

Ugarte became the fifth to head the Ministry of Health since the beginning of the pandemic — he replaced Pilar Mazzetti, who was forced to resign amid a scandal over the vaccination of the previous president, Martin Vizcarra. It was reported that he was vaccinated against coronavirus back in October, although in Peru, large-scale vaccination began only on February 9.

Earlier, a doctor from the United States told how patients dying of COVID-19 beg her to vaccinate them.
