Doctors have found out that men can become infected with coronavirus more often than women because of the peculiarities of the immune system. The study is published on medRxiv.
Researchers from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States believe that the reason for this may lie in autoantibodies specific to the male body.
As a rule, the production of most autoantibodies is recognized by the immune system and quickly suppresses, but in some cases, this work is disrupted. Because of this, autoimmune diseases can develop, for example, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, or systemic lupus erythematosus.
The doctors studied the blood composition of 177 patients who had been ill with COVID-19, and also tested the blood of healthy people and patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.
The results showed that, on average, there were much more autoantibodies in the blood of men who had been ill than in women. While scientists can not say exactly how they contribute to the severe form of coronavirus and why they appear in the body of men when infected.
Earlier, a study by scientists from Germany and Denmark showed that artemisinin, a substance contained in wormwood, suppresses the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
