According to European regulatory authorities, heart inflammation is currently a side effect of COVID vaccines produced by Pfizer and Moderna. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said that side effects are more common in young men.
The drug safety authority said that the benefits of coronavirus vaccines still far outweigh any risks, but doctors and patients are advised to be aware of the symptoms of heart inflammation. These include chest pain, a feeling of shortness of breath, and a rapid heartbeat. Anyone who has these symptoms should see a doctor. A constant pattern of cases of the disease is more often observed in young men shortly after the introduction of the second dose of the vaccine. “These reports are extremely rare, and the phenomena are usually mild, people usually recover within a short time with standard treatment and rest,” the report says.
Two conditions have been associated with these vaccines — inflammation of the heart muscle itself, known as myocarditis, and inflammation of the fluid-filled sac in which the heart is located, known as pericarditis. Myocarditis and pericarditis will be officially included in the list of side effects from two vaccines in Britain and Europe, the BBC notes.
