The U.S. was accused of violating international law in Syria

The strategy of U.S.President Joe Biden's administration in Syria contradicts the norms of international law. This opinion was shared by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Syria Riyad Haddad.

The diplomat accused Washington of violating the Syrian state sovereignty. “They continue to attack civilians and attack them from planes and helicopters, support illegal armed groups, support separatist programs in Syria, and also work to create a reality that leads to the division of the country,” he said.

According to Haddad, Washington is illegally siphoning off Syrian natural resources, while the country itself is suffering from a shortage of them due to American sanctions. He stressed that the American occupation threatens the region and brings suffering to the population of Syria.

On June 28, the US military launched airstrikes against targets of pro-Iranian paramilitary militia groups in the border region of Iraq and Syria. The US Defense Ministry said that this was done to eliminate the threat and in response to a number of attacks aimed “at the interests of the United States” in Iraq.

The United States has repeatedly been accused of” stealing Syrian oil”: the American authorities agreed on this with the militants, for example, representatives of the alliance of” Democratic Forces of Syria “ (DSS, SDF). Washington began expanding the two largest bases in Syria back in February 2020 in order to maintain a presence in the area of oil fields. This happened despite the statements of former President Donald Trump about the withdrawal of troops from the fields.
