Russian fighter jets “attacked” a Dutch frigate in the Black Sea

Russian fighter jets, armed with bombs and missiles, carried out so-called false attacks against the Dutch frigate for five hours Zr.Ms. Evertsen in the Black Sea the day after the provocation against the British destroyer, when the ship was south-east of the Crimea.

This is stated in a statement on the website of the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands.

“They flew dangerously low and close, performing false attacks. The fighters were armed with bombs and so-called air-to-surface missiles designed to hit targets from the air, “the statement said.

It is noted that these actions took place from 15:30 to 20:30 local time last Thursday, June 24. And after “several hours of intimidation”, there were interruptions with Evertsen's electronic equipment.

The Dutch Defense Ministry stressed that Russia's actions violated the right to free use of the sea and go against the mutual agreements set out in the INCSEA treaty on the prevention of unsafe situations at sea.

“Zr.Ms. Evertsen sailed on the high seas in international waters. There was no reason for these aggressive actions. Despite this, the false attacks continued for several hours. It was irresponsible and unsafe behavior at sea, “ said the frigate's commander, Lieutenant Commander George Pasta.

Dutch Defense Minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten also called Russia's actions “irresponsible”.

“Zr.Ms. Evertsen has every right to go there. There is no justification for this kind of aggressive action, which also unnecessarily increases the risk of accidents. The Netherlands will appeal to Russia about this, “ the minister said.

Recall that on June 23, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported a warning shooting at the British Navy destroyer HMS Defender and stated that it allegedly violated the “border of Russia” in the Black Sea. In response, the British Defense Ministry said that HMS Defender “made a peaceful passage through the territorial waters of Ukraine in accordance with international law” and no one fired at it.

It should be noted that on June 28, the international exercises Sea Breeze-2021 started in the Black Sea, in which military personnel from almost 30 countries of the world take part. They will last almost two weeks on the land, sea, and in the air.
