The United States will leave about 650 military personnel in Afghanistan after the completion of the withdrawal of its troops from the country, the Associated Press reports, citing sources from among American officials.

According to the sources, the servicemen will remain in Afghanistan to ensure the safety of diplomats. In addition, Washington plans to temporarily keep several hundred soldiers at the Kabul airport to help Turkish servicemen.

Earlier it was reported that Turkey plans to ensure the security of the Kabul airport after the withdrawal of the American contingent from Afghanistan.

In April of this year, US President Joe Biden announced that the United States had completed its mission in Afghanistan and was beginning to withdraw troops from the country. The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the decision.

In 2020, the United States and the radical Afghan Taliban movement signed a peace agreement for the first time in more than 18 years of war. According to the agreements, American troops must leave Afghanistan by May 1. The administration of the new US president Joe Biden has announced its intention to review the agreements with the Taliban.

The American operation in Afghanistan was launched in response to the terrorist act of September 11, 2001.
