The Prime Minister of the Netherlands refused to participate in a meeting with Putin

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Thursday, upon arrival at the EU summit in Brussels, said that he “has nothing against” a possible meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with the head of the European Council Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“I am not against the meeting of the two presidents [of the European Commission and the European Council] with Vladimir Putin, I myself will not participate in the meeting with Vladimir Putin,” he said, specifying that the reason is “[the case of] MH17.”

On Wednesday, the Financial Times newspaper reported that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel allegedly made a proposal to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to a meeting with EU leaders. According to the publication, the initiative was supported by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Germany has not yet confirmed or denied this information.
