China condemns EU sanctions against Belarus

The Chinese authorities are strongly against the next package of unilateral EU sanctions against Belarus. This was announced on Tuesday by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian.

“We strongly oppose the use of threats and unilateral sanctions in international relations, and China is against the interference of external forces in the internal affairs of Belarus,” he stressed at a regular briefing.

According to the Chinese diplomat, the EU should show respect for the sovereignty of Belarus and the specifics of its socio-economic development. “We believe that the Belarusian people are able to ensure political and social stability in their own country through their own efforts. We hope that the international community will play its constructive role against this background, " he concluded.

The EU Council at the level of foreign ministers on Monday reached an agreement on the introduction of economic sanctions against seven sectors of the economy of Belarus. According to the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrel, the discussion of the measures directed against Minsk will continue at the meeting of the heads of state of the association on June 24-25, and the approval will take place after the summit.

The fourth package of European sanctions against Belarus affected 86 individuals and legal entities. It began to be prepared at the beginning of the year, but the issue of its application became practical only after the incident with the landing of a Ryanair plane at the Minsk airport and the arrest of the opposition blogger Roman Protasevich.
