Brussels and Washington intend to help the least developed countries not only overcome the pandemic but also to implement an economic recovery after this crisis.
The European Union and the United States intend to create conditions for COVID-vaccination of two-thirds of the world's population by the end of 2022. This was announced on Tuesday, June 15, in Brussels by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, during a press conference following the EU-US summit.
“We were the only ones who intended to send COVID-19 to the history books, but there is only one way to do this — international cooperation and ensuring access to vaccines for the entire population of the planet. There are four ways we can do this. The first is export, the second is through COVAX, the third is through vaccine subsidies, and the fourth is through the development of their production facilities. Our goal is clear — we want to vaccinate at least two-thirds of the world's population by the end of 2022, " Michel said.
He noted that the experience of fighting COVID-19 should be taken into account when preparing for future health crises. So, the global recovery from the pandemic means recovery for everyone, not just for a few of the most developed countries, Michel said.
Therefore, the EU and the US have a common interest in helping less developed countries not only to overcome the pandemic but also to implement an economic recovery after this crisis.
According to him, to this end, other areas of cooperation between the parties are agreed upon, in particular, technological development within the framework of “green” transformation and the fight against climate change, the reform of the WTO, and the creation of fairer conditions for international trade, the promotion of democracy.
As reported, the EU-US summit was held on Tuesday, June 15, in Brussels during the first visit to Europe by US President Joe Biden after taking office in January this year.
Earlier it was reported that 300 million COVID vaccinations were made in the European Union. The EU authorities intend to vaccinate 70% of the adult population in the countries of the bloc by the end of July.
A week ago, it was reported that in the EU, 25% of the entire adult population received two doses of coronavirus vaccines — 90 million people.
