India accused of hiding data on COVID-19 deaths

The number of people infected with the coronavirus increased in India over the past day by 94,052 and amounted to 29,183,121. As the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported on its website on Thursday, the number of deaths associated with the infection increased by 6,148 in 24 hours and reached 359,676.

The recorded increase in the number of deaths from this infection per day was the largest for India for the entire time of the epidemic in the country. The previous anti-record was recorded on May 19 and was 4,529.

The sharp jump in deaths in 24 hours is due to the fact that the Bihar state government revised the numbers of deaths from infection after conducting an on-site check. While on Wednesday the state reported 5,478 deaths overall in the epidemic, the audit showed that more than 3,000 deaths were not accounted for, and on Thursday it was reported that in fact, this number is more than 9,000 people.

The audit was carried out after the Patna High Court (the highest court in Bihar) requested a review of the data, amid public and media claim that the regional government is hiding the real number of infections and deaths in the state. As a result, on Thursday, local authorities reported a daily increase in the number of deaths in 3,971.

The Indian opposition and the media often report that sometimes the local authorities hide the real data on the number of deaths and cases of coronavirus infection. According to some observers, after the "Bihar scandal”, other states may also revise the statistics on the coronavirus.

For three days in a row, the Indian Ministry of Health has registered less than 100 thousand new infected people — on Wednesday, the agency reported 92,596 new cases of coronavirus infection, and on Tuesday - 86,498 infected. Before that, since April 5, the daily number of new cases of infection exceeded 100 thousand. The anti-record for this indicator was recorded on May 7 and amounted to 414,188 cases.

According to the ministry, in the last 24 hours, 151,367 patients recovered from COVID-19, the total number of those cured was 27,655,493. Meanwhile, the active number of COVID-19 cases in the country is 1,167,952, which is 63,463 less than a day earlier. According to the Ministry of Health, over the past 24 hours, 3,379,261 people were vaccinated against coronavirus infection, the total number of vaccinations made in the country reached 242,726,693.
