The U.S. Department of Justice was able to locate and recover most of the money paid as a ransom to the hackers of the DarkSide group who broke into the Colonial Pipeline oil pipeline. According to media reports, the operator company had to give the extortionists more than $4 million.
"The Department of Justice managed to locate and recover most of the Colonial ransom that was paid to the DarkSide network after the ransomware attack last month," Lisa Monaco, the First Deputy Attorney General of the United States, said at a briefing.
In May, a cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline company's pipeline in the United States caused a shortage of gasoline. Fuel prices began to rise, and kilometer-long queues formed at gas stations.
