The U.S. sells 2 million barrels of oil from detained Iranian tanker

The United States received $100 million for the sale of about 2 million barrels of oil that the United States seized on the Achilleas tanker, which was detained in February, suspected of transporting Iranian oil, the Associated Press reports.

A Liberian-flagged tanker was detained off the coast of the Emirate of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates in early February. Achilleas was later moved to Houston, Texas.

“The participants in the scheme [cargo transportation] tried to hide the origin of this oil by reloading it from one ship to another, falsifying documents and taking other measures, as well as by providing fake shipping invoices in order to mislead the owners of Achilleas in relation to this oil,” the US Department of Justice said at the time.

According to US investigators, this oil belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an elite part of the Iranian armed forces, and was intended for sale to China. The United States considers the IRGC a terrorist organization.

Thus, according to the US prosecutor's office, the oil from the Achilleas tanker falls under the sanctions measures of the US laws on combating terrorism.

Earlier, the United States imported oil from Iran for the first time in 40 years.
