Another 67 people became infected with the new Chinese coronavirus on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which is quarantined in the port of the Japanese city of Yokohama. This was announced by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan Katsunobu Kato.
“We identified another 67 cases of infection on board. Among them, 38 people do not show any symptoms of the disease,” he said. Citizenship of new infected is not specified at the moment.
Thus, the total number of coronavirus infected at Diamond Princess reached 285, making the ship the largest focal point of infection outside of China.
According to the minister, in connection with the expiration of the quarantine period from February 19, an operation should begin to evacuate passengers, primarily elderly people over the age of 70, from whom the symptoms of the virus are not detected. How much it will last is not specified.
The total number of people infected with the new coronavirus in Japan has so far exceeded 330 people.
The US Embassy in Japan has already confirmed its intention to evacuate American citizens with the Diamond Princess. Aircraft designed to evacuate about 380 Americans will arrive at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on the evening of February 16 and fly to the United States the next morning. From Yokohama, Americans will be delivered to the airport by bus. At the same time, they will all have to undergo an express examination to detect the symptoms of the virus. Those who, due to their state of health, will not be able to evacuate by plane, will be hospitalized in Japan.
It is noted that all evacuated upon return to the United States awaits a two-week quarantine.
Meanwhile, Japan has conducted clinical trials of AIDS drugs to treat patients with coronavirus. This is an American-made drug, and it is known that it has already been successfully tested on one of the patients with coronavirus. After their use, the condition of the infected patient improved.
