The US State Department recommends that American citizens do not visit Belarus

The US department asks to refrain from traveling to Belarus because of the “selective application of laws, the risk of detention and the coronavirus pandemic.”

“The Belarusian authorities have detained tens of thousands of people, including US citizens, on charges of involvement in opposition parties and participation in political demonstrations,” the publication says.

It also claims that on May 23, official Minsk forced a commercial flight through the republic's airspace to land in order to arrest an opposition journalist.

In addition, the United States notes that Belarus may not recognize the presence of American citizenship for persons with dual citizenship, as well as postpone consular access or refuse to grant it.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden instructed to take action in connection with the incident with the plane in Belarus.

On May 23, the founder of the NEXTA Telegram channel, Roman Protasevich, was detained by Belarusian law enforcement agencies after an emergency landing of an Irish Ryanair plane en route from Athens to Vilnius. It was also reported about the detention of his girlfriend, Russian Sofia Sapegi.

In Belarus, Protasevich is charged with several counts, including organizing mass riots. The Belarusian authorities consider the NEXTA Telegram channel to be extremist.
