In DR Congo, there was a powerful eruption of a volcano

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there was a powerful eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano, which is located near the large city of Goma, according to the official representative of the city authorities, Patrick Muyaya, on Twitter.

“The evacuation plan [of the population] from the city of Goma has been activated,” he wrote, commenting on the incident.

The city has a population of 1.5 million people. One of the features of the Nyiragongo volcano is the very fast-spreading lava. The reason for the superfluidity of lava is a special chemical composition. Volcanic flows can spread from the slopes of the volcano at a speed of up to 96 km/h.

Nyiragongo, as an active volcano, is part of the Albertine Rift, its height is 3,470 meters. Its eruptions often cause damage to the local population and nearby cities. The largest losses in the history of observation were 600 people, this happened in 1977.

The last time Nyiragongo erupted was in 2016.
