LSD will be legal in the US: “It can cure serious mental illness”

The United States may legalize the use of LSD and hallucinogens for therapeutic purposes by 2023. This is evidenced by a study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco and published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine, which demonstrates how 3,4-methylenedioxy-N — methylamphetamine, or ecstasy, or molly, helps to cure post-traumatic stress disorder if accompanied by traditional psychological therapy.

The trial involved war veterans such as Scott Ostrom, who fought in Iraq and then tried to commit suicide. After the therapy, he told the New York Times that he was “literally a different person,” as were 67 percent of the participants in the third phase of the study. Thus, the results open up the possibility that the FDA allows psychedelics, such as LSD, to treat serious mental health problems. And it is possible that over time, recreational use will also be legalized.

The drug, which became popular in the 1960s after Swiss Albert Hofmann synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide in 1938, was banned in the United States in 1968. President Nixon called researcher Timothy Leary, who, along with colleague Richard Alpert, was experimenting with LSD on Harvard students “ the most dangerous man in the United States.” Then, in 1985, the FDA also banned MDMA: thus, ecstasy became a drug that was illegally taken in a nightclub.

But over the years, scientists have continued to argue that psychedelics have therapeutic potential without the risk of addiction when used under control. In November 2020, Oregon became the first state to legalize the use of LSD. Thanks to the Nature study, progress may be made in the rest of the country, but doctors continue to preach caution.
