Anthony Blinken has acknowledged Israel's right to “defend its citizens and territory” from Palestinian attacks but hopes to reduce tensions.
Rocket attacks on Israel should stop immediately, and the Palestinians and Israelis should take concrete steps to reduce tensions in the region.
This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at a meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah al-Safadi, reports Reuters.
“We are very focused on the situation in Israel, in the West Bank, in the Gaza Strip, very deeply concerned about the rocket attacks that we are seeing now, which they need to stop, they need to stop immediately,” the publication quotes the head of the State Department.
He also added that it is important that all parties take measures to de-escalate and resolve the situation, and noted that “ Israel has the right to protect its citizens and territory from these attacks.”
Blinken said the escalation in the region will be discussed during talks with the Jordanian minister.
Recall that Palestinian groups fired at least 40 rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory. Most of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system. Shortly before that, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group issued an ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of Israeli security forces from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and the Sheikh Jarrah area.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian side has already reported 20 dead as a result of the retaliatory Israeli airstrike, among them allegedly three children. The Israelis claim to have eliminated one of the Hamas commanders.
The escalation came amid clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
