The drug was the first brainchild of non-Western developers to get the green light at this level. The vaccine has limitations on its use.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine. WHO recommends the use of the vaccine for “emergency use” for adults aged 18 years and older in two doses at intervals of three to four weeks.
The drug is produced by a Chinese state-owned company. This is the first vaccine developed by a non-Western country and supported by WHO — previously only vaccines produced by Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, and Moderna were approved. Millions of people in China and other countries have already been vaccinated against the coronavirus with the Sinopharm vaccine, the BBC reports.
According to experts, the effectiveness of the vaccine is 79% for all age groups. Its advantage is not very strict storage conditions.
“The simple storage requirements of the drug make it suitable for low-resource facilities,” the WHO said.
