EU to remain neutral in the possible war between the US and Russia — Munich Conference report

Many Europeans believe that increasing confrontation with Russia will not benefit the European Union. At the same time, European politicians are thinking about the gradual weakening of anti-Russian sanctions. Like, even during the Cold War, the Soviet Union was a reliable supplier of energy resources. This is discussed in the annual report of the Munich Security Conference entitled “Westlessness” (“Less Western”), which will be held February 14-16 in the Bavarian capital.

A survey by the European Council on Foreign Relations in eight EU countries for 2019 shows that on average, nearly 70% of Europeans favor a neutral EU status in the US-Russia conflict.

At the same time, according to the Pew Research Center for 2019, an average of 60% of respondents in four EU countries believe that the US uses its armed forces to protect its NATO allies.

Russia may have become a direct and sharp challenge for the West. Despite ongoing debate over military spending, since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, NATO members have invested heavily in collective defense. Moscow provoked Europeans by constantly interfering in European elections, spreading an absurd distortion of history, not to mention the poisoning in Salisbury and the murder of a former Chechen fighter in a city park in Berlin, “the report said.

At the same time, the authors of the sixth edition of the report of the 56th Munich Security Conference cite other prevailing opinions in the EU: “A further break in economic ties (with Russia.) Will further push Russia away from Europe.”

From February 14 to February 16, the 56th Munich Security Conference will be held in Munich. The organizers announced the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky along with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
