The North Atlantic Alliance will hold military exercises Steadfast Defender 2021 with the simultaneous participation of up to 9 thousand military personnel on the southern flank of the alliance with the training of the transfer of reinforcements from the United States.
This is stated in a statement on the NATO website.
The exercise will take place from May 20 to June 22 and will involve more than 20 NATO allies and partners from North America and Europe.
"The exercise will test the readiness and military mobility of NATO-troops will be deployed on land and at sea, from North America to the Black Sea region and off the coast of Portugal. The exercise with more than 9,000 troops demonstrates that NATO has the capability and determination to protect all allies from any threat, " said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
Steadfast Defender 2021 will be the first large-scale test of the adapted NATO command structure involving two new commands-the Joint Support Command, based in Ulm, Germany, and the Joint Force Command Norfolk, based in the United States.
The first phase is being led by Joint Force Command Norfolk and will include a naval combat exercise involving about 5,000 troops and 18 ships, including the British carrier strike group led by the newest aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
Meanwhile, the command part of the exercise will take place in Ulm to coordinate the rapid movement of Allied forces and equipment across European borders. About 300 people will be involved in this part of the exercise.
At the end of May, under the auspices of Steadfast Defender 2021, a Joint Rapid Response Task Force led by Turkey will be deployed in Romania. About 4,000 military personnel from 12 countries will be involved.
