The Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency Anvisa has rejected a request from the authorities to import and use the Russian vaccine against the coronavirus “Sputnik V” in the country.
Permission to import the vaccine into the country is being sought by the governors of Brazil's 14 states, but Anvisa has refused to grant it “until data is provided to address the identified deficiencies.”
According to the main speaker at the Anvisa meeting, one of the agency's leaders, Alex Machado Campus, most of the countries that have registered the Russian vaccine do not have sufficient authority in the world. The Russian vaccine was also blamed for “the presence of an adenovirus capable of multiplying in it.”
At the same time, the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled earlier that the regulator had to make a decision on the import of the vaccine by the end of April. Otherwise, the permission should have been issued automatically.
The Russian vaccine Sputnik V's Twitter account emphasizes that all the necessary data was provided, and the refusal has “nothing to do with access to information or science.”
“We hope that science will be used to make decisions, and not pressure from another country,” the report says.
