Blinken called the Arctic a “new theater of conflict” over Russia

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Russia's growing role could lead to the emergence of a “new theater of conflict” in the Arctic.

In February, a Russian gas tanker sailed the Arctic Northern Sea Route for the first time in history. Until recently, this route was only passable for a few weeks a year. But as the Arctic warms twice as fast as the global average, this period is getting longer, “ Blinken said.

The Secretary of State added that Moscow “exploits these changes”, trying to gain control over the new spaces. At the same time, it is upgrading its bases in the Arctic and building new ones.

Earlier it was reported that the United States is closely monitoring Russia's activity in the Arctic, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said during a briefing. According to him, this region is very important for US defense interests. Kirby stressed that Washington is going to protect its national interests in the Arctic.
