The US Ambassador to Russia, John Sullivan, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the United States announced the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
"I would also like to say that the US ambassador has been summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry," she said during a briefing.
Zakharova promised to share the details of the conversation. In addition, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added that the conversation in the Russian department "will be difficult for the American side."
On April 15, the United States imposed sanctions against 32 Russian individuals and organizations because of Russia's "interference" in the US elections.
In partnership with the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, the United States also imposed sanctions on eight individuals and entities associated with Crimea.
In addition, the US Treasury banned companies from buying up Russian government debt from the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Welfare Fund.
