The US has closed the Guantanamo Bay unit for dangerous criminals

The United States has closed a block of the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba for the most dangerous criminals, NBC News reports, citing the US military.

It is noted that the prison staff” safely and without any incidents “ moved all the prisoners from camp 7 to the neighboring building 5. The most strict conditions of detention were maintained in the closed block. Now all 40 prisoners are on the territory of two facilities.

The closure of unit 7 does not jeopardize the safety of the staff and does not violate the current conditions of detention of prisoners. However, this solution will help reduce transaction costs.

Recall that in February of this year, the administration of US President Joseph Biden began the process of closing the prison in Guantanamo Bay. The order to disband the institution was signed by Barack Obama as the leader of the United States on January 21, 2009. The camp was supposed to be closed within a year, but the decree was not implemented. In early 2018, US President Donald Trump signed an order to preserve the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Earlier, the Guantanamo commander was left without a job because of the investigation. Rear Admiral John Ring was relieved of his post “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command.”
