Brazil has identified a new type of coronavirus, similar to a strain from South Africa. Dimas Covas, president of the Butantan Institute, said it could be an evolved Brazilian strain. “(The variety) is similar to a strain from South Africa, " he said. The patients who were found to have the virus did not travel or communicate with people who had visited the African country.
It is noted that a case of infection was detected in the state of Sao Paulo. Covas noted that there is a possibility that the identified virus may be the result of the evolution of the Brazilian P1 strain.
The 501.V2 strain was first identified in South Africa in October. According to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), this variety is now the dominant form of the virus in South Africa.
Preliminary studies have shown that this strain, just like the one found in the UK, is more contagious, but there is no evidence yet that it affects the severity of the disease.
