Samia Sulhu Hassan replaced John Magufuli as head of state, who died unexpectedly at the age of 61.

For the first time in the history of Tanzania, a woman took over the presidency. Samia Sulhu Hassan, who was previously vice president, was sworn in, local media reported on Friday, March 19.

“I, Samia Sulhu Hassan, promise, to be honest, uphold, and defend the Tanzanian constitution,” she said as she swore in office.

Earlier this week, former Tanzanian President John Magufuli passed away unexpectedly at the age of 61. He has served as head of state since 2015.

The official cause of Magufuli's death was a heart attack. But according to the Financial Times, the President of Tanzania was sick with coronavirus and did not get in touch for a long time. He was first treated in Congo and then in India.

Magufuli was one of the brightest COVID skeptics in Africa, advised to treat him with herbs and prayers.

Tanzania stopped publishing incidence statistics in April 2020, when the number of detected cases of this infection reached 509.
