US will not supply AstraZeneca vaccines to EU

Washington said it would not supply the European Union with US-made AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. Reported by Reuters.

The US said it will not be shipping AstraZeneca vaccines to the EU “at this point in time”. It says it could complicate vaccination plans in the 27 EU countries, and has been grappling with delays in the supply of vaccine manufacturers since January.

Earlier this year, AstraZeneca said the EU would cut its second-quarter shipments by at least half to less than 90 million doses. However, later AstraZeneca proposed to partially fill the gap with vaccines produced outside Europe, including in the United States.

The US stance could jeopardize AstraZeneca's attempts to bring shipments closer to its contractual obligations with the EU by 180 million doses in the second quarter.

US President Joe Biden said that the US government will first give Americans vaccines against COVID-19, and then any excess will be shared with the world.

Italy, Iceland, Denmark, and Norway have suspended vaccination against COVID-19 with AstraZeneca due to the appearance of blood clots in those vaccinated. The EU has blamed manufacturers for vaccine supply disruptions.
