The European Parliament proposed to use Nord Stream 2 to put pressure on Russia

The European Union should use the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as a lever of pressure on Russia until it can freeze its construction.

This was stated by the leader of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, in a commentary to Spiegel.

He said the pipeline was “not in Europe's interests” and suggested using Nord Stream 2 as a political tool to force the Russian government to change course.

Weber noted that the construction of the gas pipeline should be “linked to the further behavior of the Russian leadership.”

“If the Russian leadership does not return to working together as partners, the pipeline will not be able to operate at full capacity. Then it will be the responsibility of the Kremlin,” Weber said.

The politician also stressed that Europe should “abandon its naivety in relations with Putin and other geopolitical players” and it would be “an important process of European maturation” if the EU used its trade and economic policy as a foreign policy instrument in relation to the Nord Stream 2.

Recall, being a candidate for the post of head of the European Commission from the most influential conservative European People's Party in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber in 2019 promised to block the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if he takes office. But later he withdrew his candidacy.

Germany has repeatedly stated that it cannot abandon the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In particular, according to the Minister for Environmental Protection Svenja Schulze, Germany “runs the risk of facing claims for compensation in international arbitration courts” if it stops the project.
