Senators have asked the US President to impose sanctions on companies building the Russian gas pipeline.
US Senators called on White House Chief Joe Biden to introduce new sanctions against companies that participate in the Northern Project-2 project. A group of 40 senators made a corresponding proposal. This was reported on the website of Senator John Barrasso.
“Construction of the project continues, and there is publicly available information about the ships and companies involved in the activities subject to sanctions,” the senators said in a letter to the US President.
They were critical of the State Department's February 19, 2021, report on Nord Stream 2 and related sanctions, which spoke of only one Russian pipe-laying vessel Fortuna and its owner, KBT-Rus.
“It does not list other vessels involved in laying the pipeline, as well as companies providing insurance and certification services,” the senators added.
Legislators have called for “quick and full” approval of the restrictive measures against the pipeline.
As previously reported, Germany explained the impossibility of abandoning Nord Stream 2. If the project is stopped, Berlin may face claims for damages in international arbitration courts.
